Daily Telegraph garden,
Chelsea Flower Show 2010
For the second year running the Daily Telegraph garden has won the top
award at the Chelsea Flower Show.
Andy Sturgeon's inspiration for the garden came from travels to South
Africa's Cape, the Mediterranean and California. The gardens sparse
gravel planting echoes the landscapes in these arid areas, but the plants
retain a rich English feel. The Hard landscaping elements include the
Portland Stone paving and stepping stones that provide the importantdual paths down the spine of the garden.
The dominant structure features of the garden are the Corten Steel screens that divide the twin routes, but importantly provide glimpses of the other side of the garden as the walker passes down these Portland Stone paths.
Jordans Whitbed was the preferred choice due to the light colour, tight texture and the random shell content. Albion Stone cut over 200 stones for the design during April ready for despatch to the garden builder Crocus.
The Stepping Stones were cut to 130mm thick so that they would float above the gravel and allow the plants to tumble over the stones to give a relaxed edge to structure.
Portland Stone has become one of the favoured materials in the Chelsea
Flower Show and the company have provided the stone to a number of
different garden designers over the last few years.
