The Project comprises a large office development of 13,935m2 of office floor space, basement parking and 6 passenger lifts. The approximate overall budget was £50,000,000 and the building was completed in Spring 2000.
100 Wood Street is the first natural Portland Stone rainscreen cladding system approved by the Surveyors of the Corporation of London Planning and Surveying Department.
Albion Stone and Harrison Goldman entered into discussions with the Architect on the design of this very modern glass office block and the incorporation of large Portland Stone panels.
The resulting revolutionary fixing system was the first rainscreen cladding of its kind. The Stone panels designed at 1500mm x 850mm and 75mm thickness were fixed onto two 5mm mechanically connected steel backing plates hooked onto an extended mullion section of the rainscreen cladding system.
The vertical loads were carried on the two lowest brackets and the top brackets provided horizontal restraint to the panels. The panels were suspended from brackets bolted through the slab on 3mm centres with the entire panel then suspended on galvanised cast steel brackets.

A number of different Portland Beds were considered by the Architect, however, not all were able to produce stone panels of the required size therefore Bowers Whitbed was selected.
Albion Stone set up two dedicated production lines to manufacture the stone panels for this project. Shortly after the project started His Royal Highness Prince Philip viewed the production lines and discussed the work showing considerable interest in the innovative design.
The steel frames to support the panels were designed in Germany and manufactured in UK where the stone was incorporated into the surrounding framework.
Albion Stone prepared, large panels of Independent Basebed at their factory which were used for internal wall linings.
Albion Stone also supplied 600 square metres of Independent Basebed internal Cladding at 75mm.
The Total amount of stone used on the project was over 200 cubic metres supplied over a 9 month period from the Spring of 1999 to early 2000.
