Tower Square

Leeds

  • Architect: Elsworth Sykes Limited
  • Stone Contractor: Stone Developments (UK) Ltd
  • Material: Independent Whitbed

Located in the City of Leeds, this office complex including landscaped gardens, dominates the Western end of Wellington Street.

The Tower Square site was phase one of a regeneration project in Leeds. The Specification for the building incorporated Portland Stone with red brick to create a modern building with clean lines and individual style. The Stone had to be very light to contrast with the redness of the brick.

Test results on Portland Stone were reviewed and finally Independent Bottom Whitbed was selected for its durability and aesthetics.

The floor at ground level was clad entirely with Portland stone incorporating columns carrying the same clean design lines. The brightness of the stone lightened the look of the building and added to the modern-classic look. Additional floors followed the same stone design with band courses contrasting with the brickwork.

Large stone clad bays above the entrances go up through the elevations to add to the character of the building without detracting from the overall design of geometric lines.

The Architect felt that the Portland Stone worked well on the completed building and therefore increased the stone order.

The additional stonework included walling to disabled accesses to building as well as lower walls around the ground floor.

Albion Stone supplied over 800 cubic metres of block for the project. Albion Stone slabbed the blocks and they were then Shipped to Stone Developments, Factory in Ballybrew, Ireland for working.

The finished pieces were then transported to site where Stone Developments ensured they were fixed to a high standard.
