Stowe House
Buckinghamshire

Client: The Stowe House Preservation Trust
Architect: Purcell Miller Tritton
Main Contractor: Linford Bridgeman
Stone Contractor: Linford Bridgeman
Material: Portland Independent Whitbed

Stowe House is a major work of architecture on an immense and palatial scale which has inspired and contains the work of a number of leading 18th century designers including Vanbrugh, Adam, Gibbs, Kent and Soane. The Stowe House Preservation Trust was established in 1997 to restore and preserve it for the benefit of the public and the nation. No major restoration or renovation had been carried out at Stowe since the 1860s.

Albion Stone supplied a total of 6m ³ of Portland Independent Whitbed stone slabs, sawn six sides for paving, to Linford Bridgeman.

The majority of the south front of the central mansion is built using local limestones which are no longer available. Some replacement stonework involved intricate carving, especially column capitals, and a banker shop was set up on site so that masons could reference surviving stonework.

The project was ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2006 Natural Stone Awards in London. The judge said: “This project is part of a major restoration to the south portico and roofs of Stowe House. The new stone has been carefully inserted into the original work ensuring that the outstanding architectural composition is maintained”.
